Looking for meetup organizers
July 28, 2009
Hello all!
Deep apologies from the SF CogSci Meetup-ers. Cathy and I (Brynn) have been very busy in the last few months and have put our meetups on a temporary hiatus. If anyone would like to step up to organize the monthly meetup in San Francisco, Berkeley, or the Palo Alto area, please contact us!
Cheers!

Keith Lang talks about autism and computer design at the next Cognitive Science Happy Hour
February 5, 2009
After a break for the holidays, the SF Cognitive Science Happy Hour is back for 2009. We’re very lucky to have Keith Lang from Melbourne, Australia as our speaker this month. Keith blogs at UIandUs, and is the co-creator and UI designer extraordinaire at Skitch. Keith will be talking about the link between autism, the ‘extreme male brain’ and computer design.
We’re trying a new time and a new venue this time around in the hope that it will allow more people to come. The meetup will be at 3pm on Sunday Feb 8th at the Sugar Cafe, 679 Sutter St, San Francisco. RSVP at the Upcoming page. Feedback on both the time and the venue is very welcome. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!
3rd Cognitive Science Happy Hour
November 26, 2008
The next Cognitive Science Happy Hour is on Tuesday 2nd December. We will be meeting at Axis Cafe, 1201 8th Street in Potrero Hill, at 7pm. We’re starting a little earlier this time as last time we got kicked out of the cafe!
Speakers for this month are Don Steiny, speaking about what minds are, and Tom Griffiths, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley talking about iterated learning. As a reminder of the event structure, each night we’ll have 2 speakers, followed by general discussion. Each speaker will talk briefly about a topic of interest to him/her for about 10 mins (no slides!), followed by around 10 mins or so of questions/discussion on that topic. If you’re interested in speaking at a future event, please let us know at sfcogsci@gmail.com.
Be sure to RSVP on Upcoming!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!
2nd Cognitive Science Happy Hour on Tuesday 21st October
October 20, 2008
After the raging success of the inaugural Cognitive Science Happy Hour, where we had so many people attending that we ran out of chairs, we have finally found the time to organise the second event for this Tuesday 21st October. We will be meeting at Axis Cafe, 1201 8th Street in Potrero Hill, at 7:30pm. We’ll most likely be in the outside area so the group can expand as need be—the seating is a little more flexible out there.
We’ve decided to change the structure slightly for this event, to try to focus the discussion a little bit. We’ve decided to have 2 or 3 speakers each night, followed by general discussion. Each speaker will talk briefly about a topic of interest to him/her for about 10 mins (no slides!), followed by around 10 mins or so of questions/discussion on that topic. For this Tuesday’s event, the speakers will be Brynn Evans talking about distributed cognition (and how it relates to the Social Web), followed by Cathy Edwards (me!) talking about Relevance Theory, followed by Don Steiny talking about Social Network Models of Information Systems. If you’re interested in speaking, please let us know at sfcogsci@gmail.com—even if we can’t schedule you for this coming event, we are looking for volunteers for future events.
Be sure to RSVP on Upcoming!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday!
Come join the first SF Cognitive Science Happy Hour!
July 14, 2008
Want to be part of an interdisciplinary, informal group of like-minded people who meet every month to discuss topics in cognitive science over a glass of wine? The SF Cognitive Science Happy Hour is like a book club, but for academic books. Like a fun informal study group, but you don’t need to be at school. Like a social meetup, but with a bit of intellectual meat.
The idea is to do this Barcamp style, but very lightweight. We’d like everyone to come along ready to talk about something they’ve read, thought about, or researched. You can draw this from anywhere – iTunesU lectures, online journals, MIT open courseware, your own research, something you learned at school. The idea is something like 10 mins, followed by discussion with everyone in the group participating. It’s designed to be very low pressure, but to allow members of the group to pass their knowledge on.
We welcome people with backgrounds or interests in any field. The Wikipedia definition of cognitive science includes linguistics, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, computer science, anthropology and biology, but anyone who is interested why our minds work the way they do is welcome.
The first meetup will be on Wednesday 23rd July at 7:30pm, at Axis cafe in Potrero Hill. Interested? Then contact Cathy or Brynn either via email (sfcogsci@gmail.com) or Twitter (@cathye and @bmevans).
